Video 48: THE SEVENTIES # 87: DANTE RIVERO, BOOTS ANSON-ROA ...: "Wanted: Perfect Mother" (1970) Lea Productions Manila Film Festival Entry Release Date June 14, 1970/ Ideal Serialized in...
I remember watching this movie with my two elder sisters, Ate Mer and Malou, and a cousin,
Ate Luning at Life Theater sometime in 1970. We still live in P. Guevarra , Blumentritt area,
and though I did not like the movie that much I enjoy going to the movies. That was one bit of
luck of being the first boy in the family, I get to be picked up each time some elder sisters or
cousins want to watch a movie.
We got the chance to see Mila Ocampo and Snooky, who was about 4 years old that time, when
they made a personal appearance in Life Theater. That was the first time I got the chance to see
actors from the movies in person. Mila Ocampo, the mother was a real beauty and Snooky was
a milky white baby. They were mere mortals but you get the bragging right when you tell others
about the experience.
Life in Blumentritt was very different from the life we had in Guadalupe. We had a lot of cousins
to blend with. Unlike my sisters, I spend most of the time at home watching TV. Ate Norma has
a lot of cousin-friends and was a bit popular with the boys. Her closest friend was a cousin, Ate
Osie and Ate Luning, also a cousin who live with us. Ate Mer was recovering from an illness
while Malou was a bit tomboyish having boys his age as playmates.
There was a Juke Box just across the street, inside Kuya Tony and Ate Mely's apartment, where
the bachelors gather around after lunchtime. They got to play songs, mostly love songs, hoping
to catch glimpses from the windows of the girls they are dedicating the songs to. Sometimes they
shout the names to catch attention and joke around as if serenading. Ate Norms was closely
guarded by our mother, so she opted to go "intern" in Family Clinic School Of Nursing to get a
some form of independence.
Ate Mer and Malou were both studying in Jose Abad Santos High School wearing white and gray.
I was studying in Cecilio Apostol Elementary School, morning class. After school, I had to accompany my 2 younger brothers, Fred and Fernando, attend a house-school pre-school class at Felix Huertas St., two blocks from our apartment. I am not sure if they still remember it, but that
was where they learned how to do the ABC and write their names and address.
The only other time that I get to go out is when I am sent on an errand to buy something. I never
got to play on the streets when I was still a kid so the only time that I came to have playmates
was when I entered my first grade. Life at school was fun, and I usually had twenty centavo
allowance which could buy a lot during those days. Sago drink was only 5 centavos and you get
5 fishballs for another five. Imagine one pack of raisins for only 10 cents. Jeepney ride was 10
centavos but I made friend with Kuya Tony's son, Junior, and we just walked home after class.
I enjoyed elementary school years so much that even until now, I could still name all the teachers
I had from grade one to grade six. I also remember most of my classmates by name and would
probably be able to recognize them if ever I got a chance to see them again. I was in section 7
in grade one under Mrs. Quirante but got transferred to section one, under Mrs. Borja, when I
reached grade two. Grade 3 was with Mrs. Jimenez, and grade 4 was under Mrs. Sim and Miss
Indiongco. Some other teachers I remember were Mrs. David, (science teacher), Mrs. Guevarra
(English), and Miss Palencia (Work Education).
I could still name at least 30 of my classmates who were practically with the same class from
grade 3. Everybody will remember the prettiest girl in class, Zenaida Madamba, who was my seatmate for 5 years. Our seating arrangement were always according to alphabetical order, and
we always ended up occupying the same seat perhaps by fate. She was my only crush in my
elementary years but our path never crossed again after graduation.
Funny how things re when you're getting old. The past, the memories of the olden days come
so clearly but you get to forget some simple things. Trying to remember where you left your
pen the other day seem harder than remembering your childhood years. I need to write these
things lest I forget them again and be buried at the back of my mind.

Teritoryo Ko Ito! 1979 Rudy 'Daboy' Fernandez, Ace Vergel, Bembol Roco ...
One of the biggest hit in 1979, fitting together three of the fastest rising junior action stars, namely.
Rudy "Daboy" Fernandez, Ace Vergel and Bembol Roco. I remember seeing this movie with my two
younger brothers, Fred and Fernando at ABC Tri-Cinema. I kind'a envy the bond between the two for they were the best of friends during those days. They play together and share stories and rarely was I in the picture. Anyway, I played big brother to both John and Nelson, the youngest ones.
The movie pale in comparison to today's standards but seeing it again after 39 years bring back memories. It was so different then - the star system still work wonders - just seeing your idols on the big screen was enough to make your day. Movie cost only php 2.25 and the theater was just 200 meters away.
Rudy Fernandez, the heir apparent to " Da King", died in 2008 due to pancreatic cancer. He became a star in the movie "Bitayin Si Baby Ama" in 1976. Most of his movies were big hits at the box office and proved himself as an actor winning the FAMAS in 1984 for "Batuigas... Pasukuin si Waway" and in 1988 for "Victor Corpuz".His last movie appearance was in 2002 for "Hula Mo ...Huli Ko".
Ace Vergel was the son of famous movie actor Cesar Ramirez and Alicia Vergel. He was the original
"Bad Boy" of the Philippine movies and became a star in the movie, "Noel San Miguel, Batang City
Jail" in 1978. A friendly rivalry with Rudy Fernandez In "Hari ng Tundo" instantly launched both stars into superstar status. He also won the Gawad Urian Award fo Best Actor for his role in the movie "Anak ng Cabron" in 1989. His last movie appearance was in the movie, "Masamang Ugat" in 2003 and it was downhill from there. He got into trouble with the law and died of heart attack in 2007 at the age of 55.
Bembol Roco is best known for his role as Julio Madriaga in the movie , "Maynila : Sa Kuko ng Liwanag. and "Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos" in 1976. He, however was launched as an action star in 1978 when he played gangster in "Boy Pana". He is still active in the movie world and television.

THE CHEMISTRY OF LOVE
Chemistry usually is misconstrued as the study of matter. Technically it is correct, but to
be more precise is the study of change. Like electrons that changes its energy level, and
molecules change their bonds, and elements, they combine and change into compounds.
And that is life ...its a cycle ...solutions and desolutions, over and over again. There is
growth and then decay, and transformations. Its a never ending process.
A good example is Chlorine, a poisonous gas, when combined with Sodium, a highly
reactive and poisonous metal, form a compound Sodium Chlorine, better known as
table salt. Both elements loses their poisonous properties to change into a one of the
most commonly used condiment to add flavor to foods.
As in love, two imperfect persons can form a perfect relationship. As the saying goes,
"the door to happiness is a very narrow one that only one person can pass through, so
they must become one." That is why spouses are called the better half -- a good
relationship is formed when both partner feel that their mates are a gift from heaven.
When one partner think that they don't deserve their mate, they are called the
"bitter half."
One of the best love chemistry example that I have seen on screen is the movie,
"Yours, Mine, and Ours". The movie, a romance-comedy, starring Dennis Quaid
as Coast Guard Admiral Frank Beardsley moved back to his old hometown with
his eight kids. There, he encounters his old flame from high school, hand-bag
designer Helen North, who too had ten children of her own from previous marriage.
Sparks flew between them and they decided to get married but their contrasting
life style posed a lot of problems for the opposing children. Helen and Frank's
children have no intention of playing nicely and finally decided to band together
to sabotage their parents' relationship.
Its a very entertaining movie, and aside from the moral lesson learned, you'll get
a hint of how you could make things work even when there are very few common
grounds to dwell on.
Here's one of the best scene from the movie. The part where the judge was about
to render judgement regarding their application for divorce :
JUDGE : There's been a great fear expressed by many people that no woman can
give this large number of children sufficient affection and attention to
allow them to grow up in a healthy atmosphere. But in this court's
investigation of your home, the reverse seem to be true. The children
are all seemingly happy, well fed and the house is amazingly clean and
in good order. My wife has two children, one poodle and a full time maid
and can't seem to manage anything. What is your secret ?
HELEN : Well, Sir, a great deal of love, a little discipline and a husband who
doesn't criticize.

HOW TO BRING HAPPINESS INTO YOUR LIFE
Happiness may seem elusive to some but it comes naturally - just don't take life too seriously. Laughter is an essential part of a happy life but not all people who laugh are happy. Some people wear a happy mask but they are hurting inside. They say that money is the sixth sense that allows you to enjoy the other five senses. Still, some people can't find happiness in riches and fame. Achieving a dream may bring happiness but sometimes we still find some emptiness inside. And yet surprisingly some people despite the failures, and the poverty that befell them, seem happy and contented with their lives. Can't help but wonder why ...maybe there's something more to it than meets the eye.
We were all born happy. Greeted with the happy faces of our parents, caressed and cared for by our brothers and sisters, held and pampered by our grandparents. They would do crazy things just to eke out a smile from our faces and shower us with attention. As we grow older, we slowly turn from little angels into "imps" requiring greater attention. We begin to learn that there are rules at home, the don'ts and can'ts, and the rights and the wrongs based on the one who's taking care of us. Fathers spoil while the mother tries to impose discipline, and siblings have different versions of the rules at home. The once happy baby's life gets muddled up, confused and unsure and from then on we are lead on unto a path that our parents pave for us to follow.
But here's the catch - happiness still lies inside us - and no matter what happens next. All we have to do is to believe that we are the one and the only one who decides, for happiness is merely a state of mind. We have no control of what comes and plays up inside our head but as we process them, we alone decides which of those thoughts are to be followed. Most of the times we don't have control of the circumstances we're in and the people who gets involve but with the right attitude and frame of mind we can remain happy and at peace with our self. Calm despite a storm, smile despite the miseries, feeling blessed despite the hardships, still willing to fight on despite the setbacks, - people live and die but its a bit different when you have learned how to live before you die. Some call it faith, others call it serenity, but as I have experienced it, I simply call it "rolling with the punches" for even if you're knocked down, you can still get up and move forward until the final bell sounds.
I don't claim to be an expert on the field - I just hope that what worked for me could also work for some. These are simply some of the things I discovered about life :
1.} LIFE ISN'T FAIR BUT ITS THE ONLY LIFE WE'VE GOT.
We've got no choice but to live the life given to us. Why this kind of life ? It may take a lifetime to figure that one out. And as the saying goes - "Once you have figured out what life is really all about, you'll be lucky if you still have some years left in your time clock." Writing about the feelings we felt in every mistakes and foul ups we made while on our way to understanding what we're in for will allow us the luxury of having a good laugh of the golden memories of our past. That we too we're once stupid and ordinary mortals falling for some old tricks played on us. Funny memories brings laughter while happy memories bring tears. Old age will teach us that our life will be measured not by the amount of wealth we were able to accumulate and the grand achievements we earned but by how much we have cultivated love within our circle of life. Love and respect goes together, and if we could remember the past with a smile and look forward with the thought that we will be missed when we are gone, then you'll find out for yourself what the word "happiness" really means.
2. COMPARISON IS THE DEATH OF JOY
Once we rate our self against another person, we're forever doomed to trailing his shadows. Once we consider life as a race where we compete with other people towards reaching a particular goal, we will always be bothered by the thought of losing, burdened by envy, and pained by our insecurities. "Those who can, do, while who can't teaches"- I am not sure who said it but it really make sense to take inventory of your skills and attributes so you won't end up trying to be someone you can't be.
A good example of this kind of person was Freddie Roach. He tried to be a champ, made it to the top 10 of his division but lost his attempt to annex the crown. He fought on, lost badly and quit the game 5 fights to late that as a result he suffered the effects of Parkinson's disease. But taking stock of all the beatings he received inside the ring he was able to figure out the things he did wrong and later decided to train fighters instead making use of that knowledge. He then crossed path with Manny Pacquiao, a fighter who had everything he dreamed of having, but requires some polishing on the edges, and as fate would have it - they became the legendary team, boxer and trainer, in establishing a record that would take generations to break - winning the title in 8 weight divisions.
We are all but a bit of a grand puzzle and we have to figure out where we would fit in. That's something I learned from years of practicing martial arts, particularly kickboxing - you have to hone up all your attributes and polish your skills, but once you're inside the ring, you alone have to do the fighting for no one else can do the fighting for you. You never never anticipate the outcome of a fight - you just allow nature to take its own course. The best opponent will also bring out the best in you and the better fighter you're up against will be the measure of the skills you have within. You fight not to gain a win but to earn respect - something that is very hard to explain to someone who has never got himself into a fight. Martial Arts doesn't teach you to compare yourself against another but for you to discover what you lack in your armor of defenses. One thing unnoticed by most is that fighters who competed with each other usually become friends unlike in other sports like basketball and baseball where they hold grudges after the game.
3. REMEMBER ONLY THE GOOD TIMES
This one's seem hard to do but doable. While still young keep a journal. Write about the good
things that happened in your life. The bad, bury them deep and try not to tell anyone about it for you
will only recall the hurt and relive your anger. Time heals and although some scars remain wear them
like badge of courage - you survived and got stronger because of the experience. Forgive and forget,
and learn to trust again. People commit stupid mistakes and most like to atone for it. If ever they commit more stupid mistakes then just brush them away and find ways not to be casualty. There's
no need to watch the bridges as they were burning, for things doesn't always work out with some.
people. Lies ruin lives especially some that are so near the truth that were twisted a little bit to put
you in the bad light. People you like to keep close start to move away ... but as the saying goes,
"when the wheel is moving downward, let go." Just write about the good times and once they cross
back into your memories, sadness may linger but a strange form of happiness goes with them.
4. AND LASTLY ...TRUST IN GOD, ITS HIS CALL
Inspirational speakers, books about success, advice from people who made it big, always tell
of you being the master of your own destiny and everything depends on the choices that you make.
No argument about that . Religion tells us that the end of our rope is the beginning of God. No argument with that either. Just play your cards right, life is but a game and you're dealt with a set
of cards to make a bet. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and its your choice if you'll to
continue playing or take your winnings and leave the game. This are a lot easier if try to make the
most out of deals and let the chips fall where it may. Its a lot more relaxing when you travel the road
of life as a passenger that to assume the role of the driver unless you were called to drive. Sooner or later you'll find your "calling", there is always one for each and everyone. God made us for something and that's one thing we have to figure out so we could enjoy the life we have.

IT MAKES MY DAY ...
A good question asked, that what makes my day. Being in the book business for almost 28 years, rarely have I wandered away from my 18 square meter of store space. There's some bit of truth to the saying that once you have stayed in a place for so long, it becomes you. I've lost touch with all my friends and been detached from my relatives that the only comfortable place I could be is within the counter, attending to customers who too are hooked on books. A good question then is my chance to open some pages in my life, and impart some of the jewels I found while flipping through different worlds, and talking to some great minds behind the books that I have read. I never dreamed of this kind of life for there is not much money to be made selling used books, but it has allowed me live in my dreams, feel the things that I imagine and see more clearly the things that most people take for granted. To learn, to explore, and to unlearn some.
Its the kind of people I meet when they enter my store that brings out the colors of my day. It makes my day to see the smile in their faces once they found the book they wanted to read. It makes my day knowing that once you have given them a glimpse of which door to open they will soon come back and be a customer for life. It makes my day to meet again some old customers who found their way back and recall the times we shared some thoughts years before they became professionals. It makes my day to know that some have made use of the bits of wisdom I've shared with them, and made some headway in their life and career. And most of all, it makes my day when they come back to ask more questions - for they add fire to my desire to go on despite the slide in our book business.
I have failed to give my kids the kind of life some of their affluent friends enjoy, but I know for sure that I have prepared them for the future. They will know how to handle anything hurled at them when they go on with their everyday lives. Someday I know I will leave them but I'm sure they will find some time to read the things I wrote - things I was not able to relate to them. They will remember me when they read some of the books I have read, and watch the playlist I have made for them. I'm sure that at least one of them, if not all of them, will see through my dreams not because of the profit it makes but because of the way it will shape their life and how it touches other lives. It makes my day to know that even when I'm gone I will be able to guide them in some way. I know the feeling, for until now I have not forgotten the lessons I learned from my grandparents, some tricks I picked from my father, and the kind of sacrifices my mother did.

NEVER TOO LATE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN
Everyday is an instant rewind - its never too late to start all over again. Every time we wake up is a new shot at life no matter how we messed up the previous days. Just like a computer, if a virus has corrupted your hard disk and there's no way of saving your files, you have to reformat so you can start all over again with a clean slate. It may hurt, it may reset back your schedules and alter your plans, but you can still do what you use to do before with more caution in mind.
You work and work, for years and years, you're always on the go
You never take a minute off, too busy making dough
Someday you say you'll have your fun when you're a millionaire
Imagine all the fun you'll have in your old rocking chair
You'll gonna take that ocean trip, no matter, come what may
You've got your reservations made, but you just can't get away
Next year for sure, you'll see the world, you'll really get around
But how far can you travel when you're six feet underground
You never go to night clubs and you just don't care to dance
You don't have time for silly things like moonlight and romance
You only think of dollar bills tied neatly in a stack
But when you kiss a dollar bill, it doesn't kiss you back
Enjoy your self, its later than you think. The years go by as quickly as a wink - that's what Vince Lombardi is trying to tell in his song. There are only two sure things in life - death and taxes.
Money earned, money gone, but each moment well spent can be a golden memory you could dig up when things gets rough. A life could change in a wink of an eye, and that's only a part of a second. If you're 50 years old, that's about 2 billion seconds. Imagine how many chances were given to you to change things to have a life that will suit you. Don't get tied up with the "I can't do it syndrome". All you have to do is to shut down yesterday and reboot today and you can have a better tomorrow.
